About Chohanga (English)

Chohanga (楚漢歌) is a traditional Chinese epic poem about the historical conflict between the Chu (楚) and Han (漢) dynasties, particularly focusing on the final battle of Gaixia (垓下). This Chinese classic was later adapted into Korean pansori (traditional narrative musical performance), making it one of the few pansori works based on Chinese historical material.

This work centers on Xiang Yu (項羽), the mighty warrior-king of Chu, who finds himself surrounded by enemy forces in a situation known as "Simyeonchoga (四面楚歌)" — literally "songs of Chu from all sides," meaning being surrounded by enemies with no escape.

The Famous Verse

The most iconic part of this work is Xiang Yu's lament:

• "My strength could uproot mountains, my spirit covered the world" (力拔山兮氣蓋世)
• "But fortune turned against me, even my beloved horse Zhui refuses to advance" (時不利兮騅不逝)
